Why Didn't Everybody Buy Amy Winehouse Music Before She Died?

Amy Winehouse Mark Allan/Getty Images

Why do people buy the songs of recently deceased musicians? Amy Winehouse's songs came out quite recently (compared to, say, Michael Jackson) so why do people feel the need to buy her songs now rather than when they first came out?
—Chanda, via Facebook

You mean why did I just buy Frank this week—which I did—when I could have purchased it years ago, when it was just as good of an album?

Well, I found out for you...

RELATED: Beehives Aplenty In Tribute to Winehouse

According to Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts for Billboard, the reason why three Winehouse albums are currently near the top of the iTunes album charts is this: Many people really, truly, didn't know who she was before this week.

Really! I did. You did. But not everybody did.

"A lot of it has to do with people just discovering who an artist is," Caulfield says. "It's an ironic twist that many people don't learn of an artist until that artist passes away.

"Or there may be a lot of people who have known about her, and knew the songs she had, but didn't necessary make the connection. And when someone passes away, people make the connection for you."

(I myself didn't own Frank, only Back to Black, until this week. Unfortunately, it took the death of Winehouse, and public discussions of her discography, to remind me of that first album and give it a listen.)

Finally, there are those who are buying the music as a kind of memorial or appreciation.

And just how much are people buying? Hey, glad you asked.

Already, Back to Black reentered the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 albums chart this week.

In the meantime, crank up the volume, and let's all sing along to "F--k Me Pumps," with me and all my crew on the latest podcast.

Kelly Osbourne, Mark Ronson Pay Jazzy Tribute to Amy Winehouse

It's just shy of a week since Amy Winehouse's death, and the tributes show no signs of slowing down.

Last night, a collection of the late singer's family and friends, including Kelly Osbourne, Mark Ronson and Mitch and Janis Winehouse, gathered together in the most fitting of locations yet to honor the soulful chanteuse...

Her favorite music club in London, SoHo's Jazz After Dark.

Rather than strike a somber tone, the night out instead served as an intimate gathering among those closest to Amy, who sought to celebrate her short but hard-lived life.

Also present at the club last night were boyfriend Reg Traviss, fellow U.K. singer (just one of the many for whom Winehouse forged a successful path) Eliza Doolittle and Winehouse's brother, Alex.

Earlier in the day, the Winehouse parents were back at Amy's Camden home, where they greeted fans and stopped to admire the rapidly growing number of tributes placed outside the residence. Mitch even gave away some of Amy's belongings, including T-shirts, sunglasses and jewelry, to some of the fans.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, Ronson paid further tribute to the girl he described as his "sister" and "musical soul mate," dedicating a rendition of "Valerie" to her in concert.

"Last night was really wonderful," he tweeted. "I'd like to thank...so many of you for helping us pay homage to amy."

We're guessing there's still a lot more where that came from.

Just consider him an Homme Fatale!

Because Joe Jonas will be joining Britney Spears' previously?all female Femme Fatale tour later this summer. So, should we expect to see him dueting alongside Brit-Brit or rapper Nicki Minaj?

Probably not, seeing as the JoBro is only tagging along for one night.

Joe tweeted the announcement to his loyal followers, saying, "This just in...I will be performing at the @BritneySpears concert in NJ on Aug 5. and get ready for #FastLife in stores Oct. 11."

The middle Jonas was rumored to be attached as a full-time tour opener before Team Spears locked in Nicki, but he'll finally get to consummate his love for the pop star—on stage, at least—while promoting his debut solo CD.

Oddly enough, Brit's other new tour addition, Jersey Shore's DJ Pauly D, won't start his stint on the girl power gig until August 17th, long after Britney leaves his Seaside stomping ground.

Bad news for Snooki, but what say you? Are you excited for the union between the Disney star and the former Mouseketeer?

T.M.I. Alert! Enrique Iglesias Discusses His Small, Spanish Sausage!

Enrique Iglasias Courtesy: Borgata

What better place to talk about what's going on down below than Down Under?

Which may be why saucy singer Enrique Iglesias decided that a recent gig in Australia was the perfect place to chitchat about losing his virginity and whether or not he's packing an impressive package. Typical concert talk, right?

So first things first, what exactly did Enrique have to say about his phallic friend?

RELATED:?What Does Lady Gaga Want to Do With Dr. 90210?and?Enrique Iglesias?

Well, let's just say "Little Enrique" may be a more accurate nickname for his nether regions than you'd think.

Enrique pulled a few brave male fans on stage at his Melbourne show to talk about their sex lives. And when one of those lucky lads told Enrique that his handsome mug must make him quite impressive in the bedroom, Enrique had a surprising announcement.

"What does Spanish good looks have to do with the size of your penis?" Enrique asked. "They're completely different things. Maybe I have the Spanish looks but I have the smallest penis in the world. I'm serious."

And thus begins Enrique's lengthy Penis Monologues. And what he lacks in inches, he makes up for in blabbing about what goes on behind closed doors.

"I grew up with a lot of my friends and all of them lost their virginity with hookers," Enrique spilled about his first time. "Not that there's anything wrong with that! They had to pay for it. I wanted to wait for the right girl so I waited until I was 25."

Another shocking fact, perhaps... If it were true. Because just a few minutes later, Enrique fesses up about the actual age he was when he lost his virginity.

"I was nervous as s--t the first time," He reveals before admitting, "Usually the first time is not the best. Mine was in my mother's house. Let me be honest, I was actually 17 and a half… I was really nervous. It lasted ten seconds."

How very… humble? But it seems that Enrique never got the memo that a little lying is OK when it comes to your performance between the sheets, because when one of his new onstage buddies said his first time lasted ten minutes, Enrique replied:

"S--t, I don't even last 8 minutes now."

And here the Aussies thought they'd just get to hear the hunk sing "Hero" live. Anna Kournikova must be so proud!

Five Things to Know About Riot-Causing Electric Daisy Carnival Rave Flick

Electric Daisy Carnival Beck Starr/FilmMagic

They were yelling,?battling cops, lying in the street—you'd think this crowd was protesting war or bleeding for a major cause.

Instead, the mob was assembled near Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles last night to celebrate the premiere of Electric Daisy Carnival Experience, a documentary about a techno music festival.?The impromptu party began after one musician?in the film?tweeted that loyal Electric Daisy Carnival fans should gather?in the streets for a "block party" in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre, but?the LAPD?quickly showed up in riot gear to shut?it?down.

Why all this insanity?over a?music festival documentary?

MORE: Another riot inducer

1. First, What Is This Thing? Electric Daisy Carnival is an annual techno music festival, where tens of thousands enjoy live music, DJs on multiple stages, pyrotechnic shows, rides and acrobats. Usually held on the last weekend in June?in Southern California, this year the three-day fest moved to Vegas. There is an 18 and over requirement to attend the rave, which has featured acts like Kaskade, Basement Jaxx, Steve Aoki and Armin Van Buuren. VIP tickets cost $500.

2. Paris Hilton?Calls for Peace in the Streets, Says Film Is "Huge": The reality star attended last night's premiere where the riot went down, and took to Twitter to chronicle the chaos. "Omg! What's going on on Hollywood Blvd? Trying to get to EDC Movie Premiere. The cops are blocking the streets and saying there is a riot," she wrote.

She soon retweeted?a tweet from DJ Kaskade, saying: "EVERYONE CHILL NOW!!! The block party has officially been shut down!?BUT?THIS IS TOO CRAZY AND WE NEED TO BE SAFE!"?

But Paris?quickly got back into the party groove,?later tweeting: "Loved the EDC movie! danced in my seat throughout the whole film. Such amazing music! House music is taking over! Loves it! Huge! :)"

3. What Is the EDC Experience Actually About? Aside from what you can see in the trailer—the lights, the crowds, the music—the film documents?the 2010 EDC festival, held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Exposition Park. Then in its 14th year, the event drew nearly 200,000 people, including will.i.am and Lil Jon. EDC Experience was?helmed by music video director Kevin Kerslake and features interviews with festival DJs and a touching?tribute to DJ AM.??

4. Deaths and Injuries at the EDC: At the 2010 dance fest, more than 100 people were admitted to the hospital for injuries, per the Los Angeles Times, and a 15-year-old girl died of an ecstasy overdose. The Dallas version of the event this year was shut down after a 19-year-old boy died and nearly two dozen others in the crowd suffered medical emergencies.

5. Party All Night: The official hours for the Electric Daisy Carnival are 8 p.m. until sunrise every night. The crowd comprises mostly '90s-era warehouse ravers, armed with glow sticks and?whatever else they need to have a good time and stay awake.

The Few, the Proud, the Invited: Linda Hamilton the Latest Celeb Going to Marine Corps Ball!

Why settle for Sgt. Kyle Reese when this Terminator star can have the real thing?

Linda Hamilton's public plea to accompany a U.S. Marine to the upcoming Marine Corps ball in place of Betty White has been heeded.

E! News can exclusively confirm that active duty Sgt. Ray Lewis has agreed to take the erstwhile Sarah Connor to the October gala which marks the Corps' 236th birthday.

MORE: Your Turn, Justin! First Mila, Now Timberlake Propositioned for Marine Ball

Hamilton, a good friend of the 89-year-old Golden Girl, stepped in with an offer to be Lewis' date after White unfortunately had to turn down his sweet invitation due to a prior commitment filming her TV Land sitcom Hot in Cleveland.

The 54-year-old thesp took to YouTube shortly thereafter offering herself up as consolation.

"Hi, Ray. My name is Linda Hamilton. I don't know if you know who I am, but rumor has it but you like your actresses vintage, so I thought I would just take a shot here and say, look, I know that I'm no Betty White, but I would be really really thrilled if you can't find anybody else to go to the ball with you."

While she admitted she's only "half as mature" as Betty, Hamilton was delighted to learn of the RSVP.

"They finally connected and she will be going with Sgt. Lewis to the U.S. Marine Corps Ball in October in Texas, and she is very happy about it," the actress' spokeswoman tells E!

Even better, she'll have some of her fellow film stars to mingle with as both Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake earlier this month accepted highly publicized YouTube invitations made by two other Marines asking them to the ball (while Scarlett Johansson declined an invite, the incredibly honored actress is gracefully sending a case of Mo?t and Chandon).

Marines meanwhile are still waiting to hear back from the likes of Paul Walker, Emma Stone, Jennifer Aniston, Hayden Panettiere and even Will Ferrell to escort them to their respective balls.

Lauryn Hill's Mystery Baby Daddy: Not Rohan Marley

Lauryn Hill KMazur/WireImage.com

Lauryn Hill may not be coming clean about her who exactly her baby daddy is, but she's at least telling us who he isn't.

The singer, who welcomed a baby boy on Saturday, would not reveal the identity of the child's father, even after rumors circulated that it was maybe not her longtime ex Rohan Marley, with whom she shares five other children.

Hill had taken time off from work to give birth and had originally claimed Marley was the dad.

What's she saying now?

MORE: Lauryn's a baby-makin' machine!

The rapper tweeted a link to a statement confirming, if you read between the lines, that Marley is not the father of her sixth child.

"Mr. Marley and I have a long and complex history about which MANY inaccuracies have been reported since the beginning," she says. "To speculate without the facts can only cause people to form WRONG conclusions. We both value privacy and for that reason defend and preserve our right to it. Contrary to the numerous reports, Mr. Marley did not abandon me while pregnant with his child. We have had long periods of separation over the years but our 5 children together remain a joy to both of us. Thank you for your concern and I appreciate all of the well wishes regarding the birth of my new son."

The Grammy winner had rarely discussed the duo's relationship or family prior to the statement, but Marley also came clean on Twitter, saying "forwarding all well wishes to Ms. Hill on the birth of her new son."

Not our new son. He is also seen in a picture in an embrace with another woman.

Last month, in a?Twitter?exchange with a reporter from the?Houston Chronicle, Marley, the son of?Bob Marley, was asked:?"So we are clear. 1.) You're not married to your ex-wife or Lauryn, and 2.) She isn't preggo w/your child, but someone else's?"

He had?responded, "That is correct until I say out of my mouth to the contrary."

Grammy winner Hill had taken time off to give birth and had originally claimed the father was Marley.

Now we just want to know who the baby daddy actually is.

All Apologies: Kurt Cobain Bridge Nixed

Kurt Cobain Frank Micelotta/Getty Images; AP Photo/The Daily World, MacLeod Pappidas)

Maybe it's us, but naming public infrastructure after a drug-addicted rocker who killed himself doesn't sound like a winning political move.

And a city council in Washington State agrees—much to the chagrin of Nirvana fans.

MORE: Facebook Censors Niran's Nevermind Cover

Band diehards wanted to honor Kurt Cobain's memory by renaming local bridge after the late rocker. See, Cobain had a soft spot for the overpass having often reminisced about how he used to sleep under it.

However, in a 10-to-1 vote, the Aberdeen City Council sided with eight citizens who spoke out against the name change, arguing that doing so would memorialize the life of a rock icon who—while helping to usher in the grunge era of rock with hits like "Smells Like Teen Spirit"—unfortunately was equally well known for his substance abuse.

The decision was greeted by applause from those who attended the hearing.

But don't despair, Nirvana fans. As a consolation, the council did agree to name a small parcel of land in a river the Cobain Landing.

Sick! Woman Wins iPod for Predicting When Amy Winehouse Would Die

Amy Winehouse Goff/INFphoto.com

Talk about sick.

Did you know that there's been a website around since 2007 asking people to predict when Amy Winehouse would die?

Not only that, but...

READ: Amy Winehouse planned duet with Cee Lo

The creeps behind the site also promised the winner that he or she would not only be crowned Mr. or Mrs. Death, but would be given an iPod Touch.

"Since we launched this site we've had hundreds of thousands of hits, 237 hate mails telling us we're the devil in disguise and 96,026 people who left their predictions," reads a note posted on the site two days after Winehouse's passing. "Out of all those entries only 4 were correct. The first person to do so did it on December 21st 2007 and we've called her the winner of the iPod Touch. We will be contacting her via email."

Just lovely.

PHOTOS: Remembering Amy Winehouse

On the day of her death, the website posted, "Amy Winehouse has passed away. Let's hope her demise is an example for young people in how not to deal with your problems. May she Rest In Peace and her music live on."

Oh, so the site is an educational tool for young people not to use drugs. Lame.

Fortunately, the site doesn't represent how most people probably feel, says Robert Thompson, a professor of popular culture at Syracuse University, because statistically speaking, the number of entries is insignificant when compared to gazillion people who use the web.

"It's macabre and somewhat sick, I suppose," Thompson said. "But we in an odd sort of way, we treat celebrities and talk about them in a way we would never talk about people that we know. They get categorized in this almost nonhuman sort of way, and we talk about them in mean-spirited ways, and we'll take odds on their death...All bets are off and all rules are moot."

Now we want to hear from you. Do you think the website crossed the line or should celebs like Winehouse expect (and accept) such shenanigans? Sound off below.

Olivia Newton-John's Daughter Faces Backlash Over Freaky Suicide-Themed Video

Chloe Lattanzi, Play with Me

Who knew everybody's favorite good girl Olivia Newton-John could have such a dark daughter?

While mom drew comparisons to Sandra Dee in Grease, 25-year-old offspring Chloe Lattanzi is giving off more of a Marilyn Manson vibe in the extremely dark music video "Play With Me," which shows her?shaking and bloody in a bathtub frying from electrocution.

Now she's facing some serious backlash, and it's not from Mommy!

MORE: Olivia's last beau faked his death

The Australian Council for Children has gone after Lattanzi for the shocking video, calling it nothing but a sad attention grabber.

"I think it's sad that this young woman has such a need for attention that she needs to push the envelope of good taste and appropriateness this far,"?the council's Media President, Elizabeth Handsley, told TheImproper.com.?"This simply glamorizes a range of harmful behaviors and does nothing to help empower young people to cope with relationship problems."

In the?tune Lattanzi sings: "Never knew love could hurt like this/What is this feeling?"?as she tries to get the attention of a man sitting on a toilet near her. She appears to be invisible to him.

The singer has been fighting back against the parents' group?with?a statement in a clip she posted on Twitter, saying the video, which has her bleeding from the eyes and doing lines of cocaine in a glamorous-looking living room, is just art.

"I know it may be quite disturbing, but I appreciate you tuning in and all the opinions that are voiced," she tells the camera. "It's purely just for artistic value.?I don't want to kill myself,?I don't want to die, I don't want to kill anybody."

Lattanzi appears lighthearted as she talks about the video, wearing a plaid shirt and smiling during her explanation of her "art," which also disturbingly?shows her pointing a gun at her own head and slitting her wrists while in bed with a man and bleeding onto the white sheets.

Lattanzi, whose father is actor Matt Lattanzi, is Olivia's only child. Before this latest controversy, she faced rumors that she'd had her face redone at the age of 22.

Facebook Censors Nirvana's Nevermind Cover

Nirvana, Nevermind DGC

Dumb.

It's not only the title of a Nirvana song, but it's also what many might be thinking once they've heard that the folks over at Facebook have removed the cover for the band's seminal 1991 album, Nevermind, off the social networking site.

So what gives?

MORE: Yes, That's Miley Cyrus Covering Nirvana

The posting of the cover on Facebook was part of a campaign to promote the September release of a 20th anniversary deluxe edition of Nevermind.

Well, Facebook took issue with the fact that the artwork features a naked baby (yes, a baby), and such a thing totally goes against policy.

"Facebook does not allow photos that attack an individual or group, or that contain nudity, drug use, violence or other violations of the Terms of Use," read the notice.

This, despite the fact that the kid on the cover, who, like the album, is also 20 years old now, is perfectly fine with his privates being made public.

"Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis," Spencer Elden tells the Hollywood Reporter. "So that's kinda cool."

If you ask us, this smells like something—and we ain't talking teen spirit.

How Big Is Amy Winehouse in Death?

Amy Winehouse POL EMILE/SIPA

If nothing else, Amy Winehouse's sudden death has reminded fans of her extraordinary talent.

The British belter is back on the charts in a big way this week. How big?

RELATED: What will become of Winehouse's music—and millions?

Her Grammy-winning breakthrough Back to Black reentered the Billboard 200 at No. 9, selling 37,000 copies (nearly all digitally), since she was found dead in her home on Saturday.

The album also topped the iTunes and Amazon charts in the days following her death. (We won't talk about Microsoft and its hamfisted attempt to cash in on Winehouse's demise.)

Her debut album, Frank, sold 7,600 copies—again, the bulk of sales coming via download.

Winehouse tunes were downloaded 111,000 times in the past week, led by her trademark "Rehab," with 34,000.

Her radio airplay increased 170 percent.

Lady Gaga's Meat Dress Follow-Up: A Bag of Bones?

Lady Gaga AP Photo/Chris Pizzello

Lady Gaga doesn't have to look too far to top the infamous meat dress she wore last year to MTV's Video Music Awards.

Another outrageous getup has already been designed for her.

What do you think of a dress made out of...bones?!

I kid you not. Read on for the tasty details...

READ: Lady Gaga Slams Target (Again!)

PigofTheMonth.com, an internet retailer of barbeque meats and sauces, has offered Gaga a whopping $500,000 to wear a yet-to-be-seen bone dress to the VMAs.

The Ohio-based company claims they have teamed up with a well-known fashion designer who has shown in New York, London and Paris to cook up the one-of-a-kind creation. Plans would also include using gourmet barbeque sauces accessories and makeup.

"We won't reveal the number of bones that it includes just yet," PigofTheMonth CEO Lea Richards tells me. However, she said it weighs about twelve pounds.

"[Gaga] would still be able to move in a normal fashion," Richards explained.

No doubt this is a quite an imaginative marketing scheme, but the dress will also be auctioned off to benefit Bones for Hunger, PigofTheMonth's soon-to-be launched financial assistance program for struggling artists.

The VMAs will be handed out on Aug. 28 in Los Angeles.

No word yet from Gaga's camp. However, if she passes, the meat company will try to incorporate the dress into New York's next Fashion Week.

Now we want to hear from you. Should Lady Gaga wear the bones dress to the VMAs? Sound off below.

Amy Winehouse's Father Details Singer's Final Hours: "She Passed Away Happy"

Amy Winehouse, Mitch Winehouse Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images for NARAS

As with any parent who loses a child early (or ever), a eulogy just wasn't enough.

Hours after friends and family gathered to pay their respects to Amy Winehouse, father Mitch Winehouse released a lengthy and touching statement paying further tribute to the memory of his daughter, whom he described as being, prior to her sudden death, "the happiest she has been for years," and whom he called, quite simply, "the greatest."

MORE: Kelly Osbourne, Mark Ronson among mourners at Amy's funeral

Mitch, who by all accounts was extraordinarily close to his 27-year-old daughter, is speaking out not only on Amy's legacy as a musician, but on her life in general, her "fantastic recovery," and even her recent happiness, found largely thanks to love with her new boyfriend Reg Traviss.

"Amy was the greatest daughter, family member and friend you could ever have," he said. "Recently Amy found love with Reg. He helped her with her problems and Amy was looking forward to their future together. She was the happiest she has been for years."

Recalling one of her triumphant performances at London's 100 Club, he recollected that "her voice was good, her wit and timing were perfect."

"She told me that she had 'thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed herself.' The last time she called me she had found a box of old family photos and called me to go over to look. We spoke three times a day at least, she was very excited."

Mitch also touched on his daughter's infamous battle with drugs, noting that "three years ago, Amy conquered her drug dependency, the doctors said it was impossible, but she really did it."

While that statement may raise some eyebrows, Mitch went on to say that the only demon she was currently battling was drinking, but that she was making great strides there, too.

MORE: Amy's jailed ex-hubby is "inconsolable" over her death

"She was trying hard to deal with her drinking and had just completed three weeks of abstinence. She said, 'Dad, I've had enough, I can't stand the look on your and the family's faces anymore.'"

As for Amy's mental state, Winehouse shot down any notion that she was suffering, and painted a picture of her happy final hours of life.

"She was not depressed," he said. "She saw [her mother] Janis and Reg on Friday and was in good spirits. That night, she was in her room, playing drums and singing. As it was late, her security guard said to keep it quiet and she did.

"He heard her walking around for a while and when he went to check on her in the morning, he thought she was asleep. He went back a few hours later, that was when he realized she was not breathing and called for help."

Still, tragic as the loss of Winehouse is for the family, Mitch said they found some comfort in the circumstances.

MORE: Adele says Amy "paved the way" for her success

"But knowing she wasn't depressed, knowing she passed away, knowing she passed away happy, it makes us all feel better."

He also seemingly took the opportunity to announce plans for a foundation in his daughter's name in order to help those struggling with the same problems that plagued the singer.

"I was in New York with my cousin Michael when I heard and straight away, I said I wanted an Amy Winehouse Foundation, something to help the things she loved—children, horses, but also to help those struggling with substance abuse."

Amy's remains were cremated in London earlier today. The family is currently sitting Shiva in her honor, and a cause of death for the singer isn't expected for at least two more weeks.

Will Amy Winehouse's Fashion Line Continue Without Her?

Amy Winehouse, Fred Perry Fred Perry

Turns out, Amy Winehouse's posthumous back catalog contains more than just her musical contributions.

Last year, the late singer began collaborating with designer Fred Perry on a fashion line, with her debut collection hitting stores last fall. As it happens, Amy, who's said to have been quite involved in the creation of her capsule collection, went through something of a prolific sartorial phase and in fact had banked enough designs to carry her namesake line through to a fall 2012 collection with the brand.

So what's going to happen to her catwalk creations?

MORE: Was Amy planning to team up with Cee Lo?

For now, nothing.

"We had a great working and personal relationship with Amy during the design and development of the collaboration," a statement released by the British label, which has already released two collections under the Grammy winner's name, said today.

"Amy's unique sense of style and attitude pervaded the entire collection. She was a pleasure to work with and will be deeply missed by the entire Fred Perry team."

Last fall, Winehouse discussed the fashion collaboration (some styles are still available online, but selling out quickly) with Harper's Bazaar, and told the magazine that she had clear ideas straight away as to what the line should contain.

"I knew exactly what I wanted," she said. "And I love Fred Perry so much. I was honored that they would even, like, 'Do you want to come and do a line?' Me? Like, me?"

She also noted that she was focused from the get-go on carrying out her vision.

"Ve'y much so. Ve'y much so. And that's been the whole thing. We've pretty much done like up to autumn/winter 2012, and I'm like, 'Have we?' Yeah!"

It remains unclear if the company will release the collections they have banked, though a spokesperson told Britain's Daily Telegraph that they would wait to speak to the Winehouse family before making any announcements and would abide by their wishes.

America Founding Father Dan Peek Dead at 60

Dan Peek was proud to be an American.

The singer and musician, who along with Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell founded the band America in 1970, died at his Farmington, Mo., home on Sunday, according to his father, who said that Peek's wife Catherine found him dead in their bedroom.

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine cause of death. Peek was 60.

Among Peek's songwriting contributions while a member of America were the songs "Lonely People," which reached No. 5 on the Billboard singles chart, "Don't Cross the River," "Woman Tonight" and "Today's the Day." The rocker's high harmonies are also on prominent display in America's most enduring hit, "A Horse With No Name."

MORE: Mark Ronson, Kelly Osbourne Among Mourners at Amy Winehouse Funeral

"I am so sorry to learn of Dan's passing," Bunnell said in a statement on the band's website. "Dan, along with Gerry & myself, formed the band 'America' as teenagers after being great friends in high school during the late 60's. It was a joyous time for the three of us, full of excitement and laughter. We created lasting music together and experienced a life that we could never have imagined.

"Dan was an equal and integral part of that early history, and I have never forgotten the good times we spent making that music and learning about life together. Although we eventually went our separate ways, his contributions to the music of 'America' have always been present and will last forever. This news brings great sadness. My sincere condolences go out to his wife, Catherine, and the entire Peek family. May Dan rest in peace, and his memory be cherished forever."

Added Beckley: "I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Dan's passing. He was a dear friend for many years. Dan & his music will live on in the great songs he shared with us all. My sincere condolences go out to Catherine and the entire Peek family. May he rest in peace...."

The trio were Air Force brats who moved around quite a bit during their childhoods. According to Billboard, they met in England while students at London Central High School.

Peek left America in 1977 after they released Harbor and soon after became a fixture on the Christian pop music scene, signing with Pat Boone's Lambs & Lions Records. He dropped his first solo album, All Things Are Possible, in 1979 and the title song hit No. 1 on the Contemporary Christian Music singles chart.

His 2004 autobiography, An American Band: The America Story, chronicled his time in America and his spiritual journey.

Peek and his wife Catherine, who did not have children, also had a home in the Cayman Islands and spent much of their time there.

They're back!

After their temporary shelving late last year, the Latino-honoring entertainment awards are back, slightly retooled and better than ever for another go this year, with nominees for the 2011 NCLR ALMA Awards announced bright and early this morning.

Back as always to host the do is Eva Longoria, who'll be joined this year by George Lopez. And—perhaps in an attempt to make it up to fans who missed out last year—this time, the public is king. To say nothing of the Hollywood royalty that made the nomination cut…

MORE: Speaking of awards, check out this year's Emmy noms!

Leading the spicy pack this year are Christina Aguilera and Selena Gomez, each of whom scored three nods for their triple-threat work on the big, small and musical screens, getting pitted against each other for Favorite Female Music Artist and Favorite Movie Actress—Comedy/Musical, for Burlesque and Monte Carlo, respectively.

Up against them in the former category is Jennifer Lopez, Naya Rivera and Shakira; in the latter category, they face off against The Other Guys' Eva Mendes and Bad Teacher's Cameron Diaz.

Making the cut for Favorite Movie Actress—Drama/Adventure is Machete's Jessica Alba, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides' Penelope Cruz, Unstoppable's Rosario Dawson, Battle: Los Angeles' Michelle Rodriguez and Takers' Zo? Saldana.

As for the small screen nods, it's a battle of the Lopi. In addition to Aguilera, honored for her Voice work, and dog whisperer extraordinaire Cesar Millan, nominees for the Favorite TV Reality, Variety or Comedy Personality or Act include George Lopez, Jennifer Lopez and Mario Lopez.

As for other hot battles, the Favorite TV Actress—Leading Role in a Comedy category sees Disney besties Gomez and Demi Lovato face off, alongside Modern Family's resident hot tamale Sofia Vergara, Glee's Naya Rivera and Victorious' Victoria Justice.

Other big name nominees include Grey's Anatomy's Sara Ramirez, Parks and Recreation's Aubrey Plaza, The Office's Oscar Nu?ez, Antonio Banderas, Enrique Iglesias, Taio Cruz, Bruno Mars, Ricky Martin and Pitbull.

In any case, there's more changes in the works: as of now, the awards will officially be playing favorites. Literally. Starting this year, rather than value one performance over another, the organizers have finally given in to the popularity contest that these things are and decided to name all categories "Favorite" instead of "Best." It seems particularly appropriate, given that this year fan votes will help determine the winners of the annual show (incidentally, preferences can be logged through Sept. 5).

The winners will be revealed in an hourlong special airing on NBC Sept. 16.

Could Lady Gaga Cause the Next L.A. Riot?

Lady Gaga Splash News

We're still not over the craziness that erupted on Hollywood Boulevard yesterday after a mob of house music lovers shuffled their way into a riot because DJ Kaskade's "block party" was shut down before it started.

(Note to self: Don't get in between ravers and their music)

The LAPD doesn't seem to be over it either, and is taking extra precautions today as Lady Gaga takes the stage to perform for fans right across the street from where last night's debacle took place.

Mama Monster is set to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live this afternoon and will be putting on an exclusive mini concert behind the studios, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The area which usually holds 1,000 fans will instead fit 2,000 little monsters after show producers were allowed to remove chain-link fences at each end of the parking lot to help accommodate more fans.

"We are asking people without tickets to stay away from the event," LAPD Cmdr Andy Smith told the L.A. Times. "We will have plenty of officers on hand to deal with anyone who acts in an unsafe or unlawful manner." Officers have been posted across each end of the small road that runs behind the famous El Capitan Theatre.

Jimmy Kimmel also expressed some worry about tonight's show, but based on another matter. "I hope Latey Gaga makes it to the show on time tonight. #12MillionMonsters," he tweeted.

We hope so too. If a bunch of glow sticks could cause that much damage last night, imagine what some crazy-spiked stilettos could do!

How Much Did Nicki Minaj's Criminally Potty Mouth Cost Her?

Nicki Minaj Isaac Brekken/Getty Images

Nicki Minaj is going to have to put her money where her (potty) mouth is.

The 28-year-old hip-hopster has pleaded guilty to uttering foul language during a Jamaican concert.

So what was her penalty?

MORE: Sean Kingston Back on Stage With Nicki Minaj After Scary Jet Ski Crash

—She was fined 1,000 Jamaican dollars which, due to the weak Jamaican currency, translates into a whopping $11.

While it ain't much, we guess the point's been made.

Per the Jamaican Observer, Minaj was charged with dropping a number of expletives during her set Saturday, the last night of the weeklong Reggae Sumfest in Montego Bay.

A local lawyer filed a guilty plea on the singer's behafl and paid the requisite penalty. Minaj, whose real name is Onika Maraj, was not required to appear in court.

Jamaica has laws that prohibit performers from using profanity in their acts. As a result, police served the popster a summons for her transgression.

Not that it mattered to Minaj.

Shortly after her appearance, the Trinidad and Tobago native took to Twitter to gush about the gig:

"OMG!!! I swear I just had the TIME of my LIFE @ ReggaeSumFest in JAMAICA!!!!! Jamaica I fell in love tonite! WOWWW!!!!"

We guess the expletive-bombing was just a crime of passion.

Amy Winehouse Was Planning to Make Music With Cee Lo?

Amy Winehouse, Cee Lo Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com, 7up

Although there were reports earlier this year that Amy Winehouse recorded a song with Cee Lo Green, it turns out the unexpected pairing never happened.

However, it certainly could have. I can exclusively reveal that...

READ: Fans create memorial at Amy Winehouse's home

The Back to Black songstress and The Voice coach were trying to partner up in a recording studio.

"We were discussing working together," Cee Lo told me yesterday in Hollywood, where he was shooting a new commercial for 7UP. "We have a mutual friend, [producer] Salaam Remi.

"There was a rumor that we had already recorded together. It wasn't true and I don't know where that came from. But we did grow fond of each other and thought we could work together."

He said of the late singer's music, "I could listen to her and she registered to me as the real thing...It's so untimely and unfortunate. What a loss. Music has lost a daughter."

Oddly enough, Cee Lo recently announced that the title of his hip hop group Goodie Mob's next album would be We Sell Drugs, Too.

Or did he?

"I said it on Twitter but I was being totally sarcastic," Cee Lo insisted. "I was just being sarcastic and silly. I have a wild sense of humor." (In fact, it's his sometimes outrageous individuality that helped him score the 7UP campaign, which carries the tagline, "Be clear. Not invisible.")

Cee Lo also insisted that The Voice team isn't concerned about Simon Cowell's X Factor. "I think there's enough room for everybody," he said. "The X Factor has a completely different premise as does American Idol and America's Got Talent and so on and so forth. I think we can all coexist—as long as we're not on TV at the same time."

Don't Hold Your Breath for New 50 Cent Album—Rapper Pulls Plug on Release

50 Cent Courtesy Denise Truscello/WireImage.com

50 Cent has a beef with his label.

Not happy with the way Interscope Records has been handling his yet-to-be-titled fifth studio LP, the "In Da Club" rapper has decided to cancel the upcoming release, claiming label execs "dropped the ball."

It probably isn't helping that his albums aren't selling like they used to.

MORE: Is 50 Cent Still Not Over Chelsea Handler?

"Man I'm not releasing a album," 50 Cent wrote on his Twitter page Wednesday. "I can't believe interscope is this f--ked up right now. I apologize to all my fans."

In a series of subsequent tweets, the hip-hopster elaborated on his future, which at this point doesn't seem to have Interscope in it.

"I will work with other artist on there projects but I will not put out another album," he tweeted. "They dropped the ball with me one time to many."

In a big pushback against his corporate overlord, 50 Cent announced he instead would put out "Psycho," the next single by longtime collaborator Dr. Dre off the latter's upcoming swan-song, Detox.

"Your gonna love it it's a big song," added Fiddy. "I just don't think it deserves a great set up sense they can't seem to get it right when it comes to me."

There was no immediate comment from Interscope.

According to Fiddy, what made him most unhappy was the fact that he recorded 41 tracks for his album and the one tune he gave Interscope, "I'm On It," ended up being leaked online.

"I hate when I can't present my music the way….I feel it should be," he complained. "But f--k it check out 'I'm ON IT.'"

Well, making yourself scare and threatening to retire is certainly one way to drum up interest in a fading music career.

Did Amy Winehouse's Funeral Violate Jewish Law?

Amy Winehouse, Fans, Memorial BEN STANSALL/AFP/Getty Images

Is it true that Amy Winehouse was Jewish? How can that be if she was cremated, and had so many tattoos, which are against Jewish tradition?
—Jewish in Los Angeles, via the inbox

Indeed, Amy Winehouse was a post-millennial queen of Jewish soul, as much of a spiritual daughter of Abraham as Carole King.

Winehouse's parents, Mitchell and Janis, gave their daughter a Jewish funeral, but some aspects of the farewell were decidedly less traditional than others:

RELATED: Mitch Winehouse Speaks About His Daughter

Yes, the funeral reportedly was overseen by a rabbi, with prayers in Hebrew and English. Winehouse's family also plans to sit shiva, the traditional Jewish approach to mourning. But Winehouse was also, indeed, cremated, which is, as you mention, not in line with Judaism.

Rabbi Mark S. Diamond, Executive Vice President of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, said he was saddened to hear of Winehouse's death.

He also explained why the cremation was unusual.

"This is a very sad tragedy, a human tragedy," he said. As for cremation, "it's clearly prohibited in Jewish tradition." The reason: Jews believe they were created in the image of God, and should return to God as intact as possible—no embalming, even, if possible.

In fact, the rabbi says, the issue is considered so serious that, even if a Jewish person expresses a preference for cremation in a will, "you are able to, and often even encouraged to, disregard that directive."

That said, well, we're living in 2011—"the modern world," Diamond says.

"An increasingly significant number of Jews are choosing cremation. It's not something I would encourage, but we live as a part of the world."

The cremation wasn't the only non-traditional thing about the Jewish Winehouse. She also wore tattoos, which, historically, are not desirable for Jews.

"That goes back to the Bible," Diamond confirms.

"But that in no way would absolutely preclude someone from being buried in a Jewish cemetery. We live in the 21st century, and Jewish people, particularly young Jews, have a wide variety of practices and beliefs, customs and rituals, that respect a blend of traditions."

No matter how her parents designed her memorial, it was likely the best way they thought they could find some peace. And I say amen to that.

Amy Winehouse Blowback: Keri Hilson Apologizes for "Best Tribute Ever," Glee Project Bleeps Ryan Murphy

Keri Hilson, Twitter Twitter

Keri Hilson just learned the meaning of the words "too soon."

"You are a stupid bitch. No respect for the dead, just sad," wrote one enraged Twitter user in response to a twipic posted by the R&B singer, along with the tweet, "*gasp* Amy Winehouse resurrected to party w/ me!!! (seriously, uncanny resemblance)."

But apparently no one was comforted or impressed by the Winehouse doppelg?nger Hilson ran into at a party, especially considering the unidentified look-alike looked pretty out of it.

"Come on, I mean no harm. All due respect. But really the resemblance freaked me out. This was simply the best tribute ever. #RIPAMYWINEHOUSE," Hilson also tweeted.

An hour later, she had changed her tune.

"Bedtime," Hilson wrote. "I apologize 2 anyone who might've taken it the wrong way. As a fan, I thought it was cool that she dressed up to honor Amy..I had no ill intent, but I understand how it appears insensitive...my bad twitterville. For real. Good night :)"

Guess you gotta get right back up when Twitter knocks you down.

Meanwhile, the editors over at Oxygen sure are on the ball.

Meanwhile, a jab at Winehouse made in last week's episode of The Glee Project had been edited out for a repeat airing on Sunday.

"I'm surprised you didn't come out here dressed like Amy Winehouse. Why didn't you?" Glee creator Ryan Murphy teased contestant Alex, who was performing in drag.

That remark stayed in, but a blogger for the Boston Herald noted that a subsequent comment from Murphy, telling Alex all he needed was "a mop and a bottle," was omitted.

The audio kicked right back in afterward.

And no, we don't get the joke, either.

Like Son, Like Father: Matching Tattoos for Justin Bieber and Dad!

Justin Bieber, Jeremy Bieber Courtesy Jeremy Bieber

Justin Bieber's father didn't just say "OK" to his 17-year-old son getting a tattoo.

Jeremy Bieber went along and got inked with him.

Not long before the Biebs joined Selena Gomez in Hawaii n May, he and Jeremy went under the needle in Israel and emerged with "Yeshua," the Hebrew word for "Jesus," tattooed vertically on their left torsos.

Dad, who's got ink all over the place, held his son's hand and everything, aw.

MORE: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez Crash Malibu Wedding

Bieber's manager, Scoot Braun, has said that Justin, whose Christian faith remains a prominent part of his persona, says prayers in English and Hebrew before going onstage.

"Justin heard me pray, he gets why I do it and now he does the same," said Braun, who is Jewish.

This tat joined an outline of a seagull on Justin's left hip, a souvenir from turning 16, but came before the outline of a large star appeared on his left elbow in late May.

While Justin was raised primarily by his mom, Pattie Mallette, he and Jeremy remained close over the years.

"I have a great relationship with my dad," he told Seventeen last year."When I was younger, he taught me how to play some songs on the guitar, like 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door' by Bob Dylan."

"He taught me how to drive, too," Justin said of his father. "He's cool."
